Being Green.

According to Wikipedia, Earth Day was selected has the day to make Americans aware and appreciative of the environment. Founded by U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson on April 22, 1970 and thisday is celebrated in more than 175 countries every year. Yesterday was the 2010 Earth Day Celebration and the love of the Earth could be seen on facebook.com with people updating their status with "Happy Earth Day!" and even t-shirts encouraging others to reuse and recycle.

With this celebration being on just one day in April, we here at 5710 want to encourage all cultures to try to be united in Being Green everyday. To help encourage others, we are trying to live by example.

For instance, every event that is sponsored by the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs and or takes place at 5710 has can beverages to aid in faster and more earth-friendly cleanup. There is a recycling bin on every floor. And even water jugs to reduce the plastic bottles of water that are usually left half full.

These small steps are crucial in reducing waste and increasing awareness of a green lifestyle. Some more tips in staying green are as followed:

o Buy Local--- you can buy fresh fruits and vegetables at Hyde Park Produce at Kimbark Plaza on 53rd Street.

o Use used items- you can decorate your dorm room, yourself, your desk, and even your computer with purchases on ebay, Cragslist, or even the marketplace.uchicago.edu. Buying from other user will reduce their property and have you be less wasteful buying brand new things- everyone wins.

o Bring your own bags to the store- less waste is made by the stores and then you don’t have piles and piles of plastic bags under your sink!

o Wash your clothes in cold water—the water doesn’t have to be warmed up so less energy is used.
